South Slocan, BCTraditional Homelands: Ktunaxa, Syilx, and Sinixt Peoples

With the ongoing cost of maintenance outweighing the use of the old Schoolhouse in South Slocan, the Regional District and the community were looking for options to bring new life to the community space, and that’s where we came in!

Cover created several design concepts for an outdoor public space, full of new amenities and opportunities for community use. The designs aimed to preserve aspects of the original structure and reflect the form, recognizing the history and importance of the site and old building. New uses were incorporated into the structure, like performance spaces, outdoor education resources, group seating, and even an outdoor fireplace to encourage use in the colder months! Located right at Playmor Junction and along the Rail Trail, this site will continue to be a great community hub full of possibilities for the future.
