Creating safe and supportive housing that empowers residents.
This project provides long-term accommodation for women who have left abusive relationships as they make plans for independent living. The facility offers a mix of second stage and transition housing, including attendant spaces.
Our approach for this project was guided by trauma-informed design strategies which support healing within the framework of safety, empowerment, hope, and connection. These elements were integrated into the building through careful design of program spaces, thoughtful material selections, consideration of occupant autonomy, and prioritising connection to community and nature. Following the BC Housing Design Guidelines for Women’s Safe Homes, the design meets and exceeds standards for flexibility, public access, safety and barrier reduction. The project was accomplished in collaboration with shareholders and through community engagement, while also following the BC Step Code and Passive House Principles.
