Nelson, BCTraditional Homelands: Ktunaxa, Syilx, and Sinixt Peoples

Creating diversity in an urban industrial zone.

This project was the first of its kind in Railtown, a predominantly commercial/ industrial neighborhood in Nelson. The design reimagines the function of a family home and embraces the shift toward flexible and remote workspaces. The building is divided into four self-contained suites: two offices and two apartments, each with an individual point of entry. This design provides an alternative to the standard single family/ single purpose building typology and encourages more heterogenous neighbourhoods.

The building’s trapezoidal shape was influenced by the irregular lot and the constraints of the site’s steep topography. The pairing of natural wood siding with galvanised metal blends elements of both the natural forested slope behind the building and the commercial industrial zone beyond it, seamlessly integrating within the complex site.
